I have recently started doing my MCSA, and felt like in stead of just using VMware to try XP Pro and Server 2003 I would use some old equipment and get some new as well to have a cabinet with some rack mounted servers in it. So I now have 2 x XP Pro machines and 1 x Server 2003 R2, and I also got a APC UPS.

And finally since I thought that after I have completed my MCSA I would do the CCNA, I thought I would ease myself in with a 2900XL switch. I got the switch from eBay for £16 which was a good price, and a Cisco rollover cable for £4.

I have two questions. I can not find Hyper Terminal on Server 2003 anywhere??? so I have had to use one of my XP machines to connect to the switch. And my second questions is theat when I have connected to the switch it asks for a username and I guess a password as well, so I wonderd if there was a default username and password or how I can over-ride it?

Thanks

Guy

Hi Burt,

Thanks for the links. I am using the password recovery process from Cisco, however I get so far and then it stops on the following:

Switch#copy flash:config.text system:running-config
Destination filename [running-config]?
1741 bytes copied in 3.172 secs (580 bytes/sec)
Switch#
00:03:16: %SYS-5-CONFIG: Configured from by

and if I press enter it just returns to a Switch# prompt, instead of showing Sw1# as in the documentation. Would it be worth going on to IOS 12.1 as it is cutrrently on 12.0? would that also mean that there would be default usernames and password?

Thanks

Guy

Whoa! Hyper terminal is not in Server 2k3 my butt. I am using it right now in hyper terminal. Goto your add and remove programs and look in the communications place to pick it up. Even in Vista HyperTerminal is still there but you have to add it if you want it.

As for the username/password...have you tried just using a blank un/pw? Usually people don't send them off with passwords :) If not maybe you can bypass all of the pretty pictures and use this

1.

Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation to the console
port of the switch. Use the following terminal settings:

9600 baud rate
No parity
8 data bits
No stop bit

2. Unplug the power cable.

3. Hold down the mode button while reconnecting the power cord to
the switch. You can release the mode button a second or two after the
LED above port 1x is no longer illuminated.

The following instructions appear:

The system has been interrupted prior to initializing the
flash file system.
The following commands will initialize the flash file system,
and finish loading
the operating system software:

flash_init
load_helper
boot

4. Type flash_init.

5. Type load_helper.

6. Type dir flash:.

The switch file system is displayed:

Directory of flash:
2 -rwx 843947 Mar 01 1993 00:02:18 C2900XL-h-mz-112.8-SA
4 drwx 3776 Mar 01 1993 01:23:24 html
66 -rwx 130 Jan 01 1970 00:01:19 env_vars
68 -rwx 1296 Mar 01 1993 06:55:51 config.text
1728000 bytes total (456704 bytes free)

7. Type rename flash:config.text flash:config.old to rename the
configuration file.

This file contains the password definition.
8. Type boot to boot the system.

9. Enter N at the prompt to start the Setup program, Continue with
the configuration dialog? [yes/no] : N

10. At the switch prompt type en to turn on enable mode.

11. Type rename flash:config.old flash:config.text to rename the
configuration file with its original name.

12. Copy the configuration file into memory:

Switch# copy flash:config.text system:running-config
Source filename [config.text]? (press Return)
Destination filename [running-config]? (press Return)

The configuration file is now reloaded.
13. Change the password:

switch#configure terminal
switch(config)#enable password Cisco
switch#control/Z

14.

Write the running configuration to the configuration file:

switch(config)#write memory

Also if you don't want the old password and just want to start off fresh (I would) i would just get into the thing and blow it away. Check out using a TFTP server as you will need this to save your life one day (Trust Me) just break the switch just to fix it, it's the best way to learn :)

Reset Back to Factory:

Crap---2003 does have HyperTerm...sorry. Never use it...
Post the sh run...

Burt

Thanks for the help Bobby. I got to step 13 and then it wouldn't go any further : (

I am not sure but would it be a good idea to re-flash with IOS 12.* as it is currently on 12.1, would this then also reset all the usernames and passwords to default values?

Thanks

is there any kind of web interface or software instead of using Hyper Terminal? As I have seen on the Cisco website something about "Cisco Visual Switch Manager", but I can't see where to download it from/
