I have several questions on upgrading Callmanager from 4 to 7.

1. What harm will be caused, other than backup, if I were to upgrade the publisher to 7 and take the subscriber out until I know how well it went (2) days. Than, how hard is it to carry on with the subscriber portion?
2. At what point in the upgrade process does CCM check the MAC to verify license info.
3. How do I print out the license?
4. Is there an advantage to going forward with 7.1 instead of 7.0
5. Do my remote gateways need firmware upgrades also?
6. Do my 7941 need firmware upgrades?

Thanks.

1. If you are going to upgrade a server upgrade your sub to a pub. Then later on make the old sub a pub.

2. when you install the licenses.

3. open the text file on your PC and print it.

4. yes it is the latest version with bug fixes

5. It depends on the gsteway and the IOS version you are running. 12.4 is CISCOs recomendation

6.The 7941 will upgrade as soon as they try to register with the new publisher. I suggest you let them upgrade to avoid bugs from running old firmware

This is how I would go about it.
License the MAC of the 4.x subscriber to be the new 7.x pub.
Upgrade it to the pub and bring it to service. Test your system and verify your functionality thoroughly. Rebuilt tne old 4.x pub as the 7.x sub. Let the devices register to the sub and test again.

If you follow the upgrade instructions step by step and your DMA backup is CLEAN you will have no issues.

Having trouble finding the license file so I can print it. CCM version 4.23

there isn't a license file for 4.x.
5.x and up is when it was enforced and needed for cucm to operate.
You will need to use the ccm node and DLU calculator to see how many licenses you have now. Then order the 7.x upgrade on cco and send the xls sheet you calculated earlier to tac with the order number and the MAC address of the publisher.

You will then get the license file needed to run 7.x

Does this make sense?

When you do the upgrade, the system itself will calculate how many DLU's that you have in the system. It will show up in the License Report window as an XML file after the upgrade is done. This file (it's text) needs to be copied and then pasted into the Cisco website listed in the upgrade guide along with the MAC address of the Publisher. There is no need to do the Excel file ahead of time. However, don't forget any 'spare' phones that you have on the shelf and not programmed in the old system. If they aren't programmed, you will NOT get credit for the licenses you already paid for. Build them into the old system THEN run the DMA tool.

Hello-

I've used routers before but is fairly new to CME and would like to set-up one in my lab just to get the feel for it.

I have a spare 2801 with enough memory, VIC, switch, and two 7960 IP phones. I have SMARTNET account so I can download the right IOS.

But my question is the CME itself. Can I just download this on the Cisco website at will, similar to an IOS? Or is this something that I have to purchase from the vendor?

Thanks for the help.
