I bought a lab version of CM 6.1. Are they any restrictions on what kinds of boxes they work on ? I know cisco recommends some of the HP boxes but i want to see if someone else has run this on other kind of boxes and what experience they have had with it. i want to use this for testing fax/T.38.

I am told that with 6.x you are restricted to the hardware that Cisco recommends. We tried and the software did a hardware test to determine the mfg and components. Of course it failed on the two new dell boxes that met the mem and processor requiremnts.

The DVD install verifies the hardware it is being installed on and will fail unless its one of the approved servers. You have to be pretty specific as well - i.e. if the 'official' MCS server doesn't have two CPU's, however your HP or IBM equivalent does then it won't work.
There is a list here but I am not sure how up to date it is:

New with CUCM 5.x & 6.x is support for VMWare as a Hardware Platform. I have never done this but apparently if the install detects a valid VMWare configuration then it will install but gives a warning that this should only be used in a test environment. Have a search on here as this has come up before.
