Received this email from a customer today- I'm not really that tech minded so if anybody could offer some assistance I would be most grateful- hopefully it's something simple.

Item was brand new-retail boxed

Hi

I have recently received the Cisco Router 887 and I have tried to configure it so that we can use it in our
company.

I plug in all the cables except the dsl one as it is in use in our current network. I then disconnect my pc
from the network and log on directly to my pc so there is no interference with our network. When I
plug the router to the electricity the FE Lan 3 light shows which sounds right as it is where I am plugging
the Ethernet cable.

Few minutes and the light goes off and when I run ipconfig i get the message that Media is
disconnected. I have tried everything, reset button, release, renew. If I do the ip config straight away,
when the light is still on i get the ip address of our server 192.168.0.1. I have asked for the help of the
IT of our sister company. But as well the trouble is the same.

Could it be the firewall on the router not letting us through? If so how can we pass through it? If not, is
the router faulty?

Thank you for your attention

Usually, new routers are set to 10.10.10.1/24, so maybe the laptop needs to be set as .2---however, it sounds like the interface is either shut down or you may need a crossover cable...if the LAN port is part of a switch module, then you need a straight-through cable. Also, verify that the cable is good.

The light comes on briefly as a test (POST).

Do you have a Cisco console cable and a serial port on your laptop?
