Hello,

I am trying to set up Cisco 861W router and I have CD with “Cisco CP”.
I want to use “Cisco CP Express” but I need to copy “default configuration file” to NVRAM.

Manual says that I need to have “Cisco CP” and “Cisco CP Express” Installed on the PC. Then connect PC to the Console port and log in to the router.

It also says, “If you use the Console port, and no running configuration is present in the router, the Setup command
Facility starts automatically, and displays the following text: --System Configuration Dialog--”.

My first question is where this text will automatically appear? (I do not see it... :) )
Do I need to open terminal and login to the router? If yes could you please tell me how?

Rregards.

I dont know anything really about CP but you can just use hyperterm and connect via console to the router. Pick the right com port and use the settings 9600, 8, N, 1, N. That will give you an interface to use. Then you can do the setup command if you wish.

Hello,

Thanks for an answer.
Could you tell me if I need to get "Cisco Smartnet"?
What is this exactly?

Thanks

Smartnet is a contract with cisco that you can purchase for your router from the vendor you purchased it from. You can purchase the contract ranging from 1 year to 3 years and different support options such as 8x5NBD (next business day replacement) so if you router dies they will get you a replacement next business day. This also allows you to download newer IOS images for the router. I would highly recommend getting a smartnet and for the 861w with a 8x5NBD they are pretty cheap compared to the peace of mind you get.

As far as configuring your router I would suggest connecting a console cable to it and downloading a program called putty and choose serial as the connection type within putty. This will bring you to the prompt of the router. Yes it will ask if you want to enter the initial configuration dialog once you connect to the console.
