hi
im new to cisco but not IT(im working for in it for 10 years now)anyway
i have an 836 dsl router and have successfully reset it by changing the confreg register and can now login and set it up etc..my problem is when i reload it my settings are gone

now before i reload\reboot it i have copied the running-config to the startup-config

copy running-config startup-config

it asks me for a startup-config filename?
is this normal?
i call it startup-config ,it reboots and my settings are gone
its possible im doing something stupid cos im only learning cisco in the last 2 weeks, but any help would be greatly appreciated

kind regards
Gary

Gary,

Do a "show Version" - last line is the config register - is it still 0x2142 - you said you changed it - it should be 0x2102.

The 0x2142 tells it to ignore the config file!

After you do a copy run start do a show start - you should see your config file you just saved.

You can also do a dir nvram: - you should see a file called startup-config - you may also see 2 other files.

I think it is the config register - just need to change it back!

Hope this helps!

thanks alot you were quite correct!
i just renamed it and its fine now!

my next mission is a little more complex...probably impossible..

my home broadband comes in via radio and my static ip just sits om my pc or firewall, with no authentication.

i have put the static ip and mask on the bri0 interface of the 836(i know this is an isdn interface,im just seeing if it will work?)
and i have put a private ip (192.168.1.10) on the fast ethernet1 interface.
i have also created an standard access list to allow any traffic from the 192.168.1.0/24 network out the bri0 interface..

im not sure if this will work though cos my broadband isnt isdn!

is there any way of getting this working on an 836 router?

can i configure 2 of the fastethernet interfaces instead and try and have a nat running between them?

i could then shutdown all the other interfaces.

am i wasting my time

thanks again!

Gary

sorry maybe i should have started a new thread..

I can't remember what interfaces that router has...post that info, and the interface that faces the modem...
router(config-if)#ip add dhcp
router(config-if)#duplex-half
and then the interface for the LAN, just assign and configure normal. If the modem is in bridge mode, you'll have to NAT with the router.

By the way, DO NOT plug anything but ISDN into the BRI!!! You'll fry the interface and/or the modem!!!
You'll be putting 5VDC onto a ground!!!

hi thanks for the reply,
just to give you some more detail, there is no modem.

the 836 is a dsl,and isdn backup router.

it has a rj11 dsl interface, and an isdn rj45 backup interface.
it also has 4 ethernet rj45 ports

my broadband comes in via a radio mast on my roof,it then goes into an alvaron radio reciever.all you do then is put the public ip,mask and gateway on your pc and off you go ,you have internet.there is no bridge\routed mode involved.

what im wondering is,if i put the public ip on one of the ethernet interfaces, connecting directly to my broadband.
can i then put a private ip on one of the other ethernet rj45 interfaces and connect my lan to this and route my broadband that way?

like a nat from one rj45(public ip)port to the other rj45(lan ip) port

i would then disable\shut the rj11 and isdn ports all together.

could i do it via a type of vlan?or route?its only ip traffic after all..or does the 836 insist that the wan connection come in from one of the specific wan ports(dsl\isdn)

i already have a firewall which im not using in this scenario.its just to see if i can actually do this?and to become more familiar with cisco.

thanks again for everyones help

regards

Gary

Garymac777,
I may be wrong but it is my understanding that those four RJ-45 ports on that 836 are just an integrated switch... If that is the case then you could use them any way that you could use a layer two switching device... (They are there to share network/broadband of the ADSL signal coming through that WAN link)...

If you look at the tech specs for that router it says that you have four ports 10/100 for the LAN (Which is layer two and will not allow you to do what you are looking to do)!

I believe that your best best is to look at purchasing an 851 or similar router (under $200 eBay) with a 10/100 fast ethernet WAN link!

I may be wrong but I hope this helps!

Gary,

maczen is right - unless that 4 port switch lets you do VLANs - and I do not think it does :-( you will need a 851, 871, 2621, 2651, 2691, 2611XM, 2621XM, 2651XM etc. or any other router with 2 Ethernet ports.

Or like I said earlier - if you want a cheap firewall/router - all you need is an old PC - I have one setup in a P2 Gateway 2000 PC and a P3 Dell PC with at least 2 nics and then install the FREE software for IPCOP or Monowall or one of the other Linux firewall/router distros. Once it is setup ity does not need a CD-rom, keyboard or monitor - you access it through your browser!

Just a thought!

An 837 will work. Won't do VLANs, but it has an ATM interface for ADSL.
