Hi,

I have changed from ADSL to Virgin Media's Cable service.

When I had ADSL, I used a Cisco 837 router.

I am looking for a replacement for the Netgear router and cable modem that comes with the service.

Two questions:

1. Does anyone know if the Cisco 815 would achieve this?
2. Has anyone tried to replace the Virgin-provided hardware with such a device and did you get it to work?

I believe the 'cable' protocol is called DOCSIS.

Many thanks in advance

1. yes
2. never used Virgin before, but it should be as simple as setting up DHCP for that interface.

Hi Dallas,

Thanks for your reply.

I am having difficulty in finding the C815 at a sensible price (or at least in my price range).

We have lots of spare 1800 and 2800 series routers at work that I can 'borrow'. They have interface cards and spare slots. I was wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to add an interface card that would support 'cable'. If so any ideas of Cisco P/N or M/N's?

Many thanks

Sorry...

Is it in fact DOCSIS that I should be searching for, or is 'cable' called something else?

Many thanks

you still need the modem that they provide, but you can plug the modem into the router via an Ethernet port and if your router does not have 2 ethernet ports, you can buy a card that will give you a 2nd ethernet port.
