We just recieved a new Cisco 6513 Catalyst switch. I am trying to connect to it thru the Console port on the top Supervisor engine. I am trying both Hyperterminal and Putty. The following are the settings for the terminal

• Bits per sec: 9600
• Data bits: 8
• Parity: none
• Stop bits: 1
• Flow control: none

I am using the light blue rolled cable that comes with cisco routers as the connection between my pc and switch. However, when trying to connect the cursor just sits there and blinks. When I hit enter or any other key it does nothing.

Am I missing something?

Make sure that you are choosing the correct COM port, whatever it says in Device Manager (Windows). If you still have no joy, then it may have the config register set to send and receive at a different BAUD rate, so then after verifying the correct COM and serial port, try different BAUD rates---you have the other settings correct...

I have tried a few other baud rates an no luck. Still same result.

Can you try a different switch in your network and see if that works ok, just to rule out a com port issue on the pc.
If that works ok, come back to this new switch and power cycle it while connected to it and see if you get anything.
If nothing still, turn the switch off and reseat the cards in the chasis and try again.

Assuming you have multiple sups, are you sure you are in the active one?

Yes...I have two sups and I am in the Active one.

Well You are missing something..... When one sup is active the other is in standby. If you try and console into the Standby sup it will say that it is in standby and you cant do anything. Verify that you can connect to that sup first, to rule out a bad com port.

All of these assumptions are being made that this switch is on. What kind of sups do you have in there? and you are sure both power supplies are plugged in, or that the one has enough juice for the chassis, plus sups and blades.

Hmmm...didn't think to suggest to make sure that the switch is on...

"All of these assumptions are being made that this switch is on."

What messages would he get on the screen if the switch is off?

1.And I quote...

"you have had more then quite a few typos and wrong posts around here. Lets not get started."

Where's the CAPITAL "Y" in "you"? Don't you mean "than", rather THAN "then"? Where's the apostrophe in "Let's"? Talk about typos...

2.In which posts have I been wrong (site more than quite a few, say maybe 10... :) )?

3.Yo momma.

4.Relax, homie...

5.Yo momma again.

6.My momma
