Hi

We have just purchased a 6148 GE TX card for our switch, This is the first ge card in the switch, however when plugged in the status light stays orange and when looking at the module it says not present.

Is this a faulty card or is there something else that could be wrong

Here is the version information.

Wisted, do a show mod and see if the status is ok. If not you may need to upgrade the IOS version. Looking at your post of the modules, it doesn't appear to be showing up at all. Get in touch with TAC. This is a straightfoward issue.

TAC is the Techical Assistance Center for Cisco. Do you have an id? Go to Cisco.com and register. Or go the long way around and contact your Cisco rep. Hope you guys have maintenance.... Viper makes a good point, make sure you specify whether your "operating system" is Native IOS or CATOS. TAC will want to know. If you have maintenance and the mod happens to be bad, they will replace it for free.

Is there an easy way to tell if this is CATOS or IOS

Easy huh..... Well if you have a 6509, I am willing to bet you have CATOS which uses many "unix-like" commands. There is usually a MSFC which will use Native IOS. But don't focus on that. IOS, on the otherhand, will provide you with a single all inclusive interface for everything. If you use "config t" to make changes for EVERYTHING, thats a dead giveaway. The cisco website also has some great white papers on the subject.

Check your IOS/CATOS matches the minimum requirement which should be specified in the doco that came with the card.
I think it is
12.1(19)E1
or
7.6(1)

I ran into this once too, where I didn't have enough power supplied to the switch to support all the cards in it. May want to post a show power as well.

You need at least 6.4.1 to run that card you appear to be at 5.4.2. Time to upgrade the box.

wisted, Agree with vipergg. I had to go to version 8 to get what we needed to support our hardware and functionality. Once again TAC would be helpful if you can setup an account.
