Cisco 3660

Bill,

That is one BIG router, not a bad deal for Fast Ethernet, 12.4 IOS and ALL the Network Modules that a 3600 router will take.

My UPS guy already gives me dirty looks as it is when I go on an Ebay buying spree ..............

Hmmmmm, my PayPal Visa is all paid up :)

Gene,

They are a little bigger than a 3640, noticeably heaver. But if you can get a good deal, ones in good condition seem to hold their value, maybe even appreciate. One with not much memory can be easily upgraded making the routers a lot more valuable than the "sum of their parts."

I'm a little upset over a recent attempt to purchase a 2651. Got to the house and it looked like it have been beaten with a club. I argued with the seller who said to return it. While it was in transit, after he gort the tracking number, he claims to have left town (he didn't tell me in advance of his travel). When he "arrived back" three weeks later, of course "he couldn't find the shipment" and refuses refund. I didn't request signature service. Its a pretty good scam. I'm disputing the transaction since he didn't tell me he was leaving. The least he should have done is to let me know he was planing travel.

Bill,

Myself and 3 others bought Gateway computers from a guy in I think it was Denver about 6 years ago P3 866 refurb in the orgin Gateway box (with cow spots and all) for like $500, he had 10 up for sale at Ebay.

He kept saying he was shipping them for weeks and weeks (had a 100% positive with over 250 sales) I seem to remember he was in IT - maybe a programmer. Well one of the buyers lived in next city over and he contacted the police, they called me and asked if I wanted to press charges etc. I said I really want my money or the computer.

A detective called me from Denver, very nice, he said he would just drop in and talk to the guy - he said the neighborhood was VERY upscale, not what you would expect for an Ebay scam. He called me back and said that the wife almost died when he came to the door. We all had checks 3 days later in the mail!! Police said that he was just too busy at work and trying to do the mail order game from the garage and it just caught up with him - he really wasn't a scam :) Just swamped :-(

These were very hot on Ebay at the time and I bought another for like $50 less from someone else (exact same Gateway computer deal) and still have it as one of my backup PC's now :)

I did get a Cisco hub that was packed so bad that the plastic face plate was smashed but I only paid like $7 for it so I just let him know thanks for nothing and left a negative for him - he was not very helpful or sorry and it was not worth much trouble :-(

I also bought a 3620 that has an issue that is pretty obvious and well documented on Google - pointed it out to the seller and he offered to take it back, but I bought another that needed memory, a face plate and rackears etc. so I added up what I paid, looked at what it would cost for what I needed and I was ahead of the game - so I kept the bad router and used the parts to complete the other 3620 :)

I had a guy scam me on a blu ray player---detectives in Arizona contacted me---guy was willing to give me the $25 that PayPal did not cover---they cover up to $200 on ANY purchase or something. I was too lazy to call the dude---gave him negative feedback. It was money I would have spent anyway. Hey, wait...

The seller just dropped the B.I.N. price to 114 inc. shipping. No faceplate, but does have IOS 12.4 something or the other.

Bill,
Face plate does not matter.. You will have the router turned around in the rack most likely anyway if you are concerned about the way it looks! The plates are expensive though so it does add value when they come with..

I've seen 3660 faceplates on ebay for around 35 bucks. It doesn't impact functionality, but does its eventual resale value. Having IOS 12.4 is definitely a plus.

I'm thinking about getting another 3660, but not sure I need 6 routers in a home lab (2 x 3660, 2 x 3640, 2 x 831).

Bill,

I think it is all in how you sell it, I have seen people sell items with no good pictures, no show version, crappy description and I don't give it a 2nd look.

If I had a good description, rack ears, max DRAM and FLASH, the show version, current IOS, current IOS backed up on a CD etc. I would be less likly to care if it had a face plate. As billy said - when they are in the rack you don't see the face :)

Now switches are different, I don't want one with a cracked or broken face plate - just looks like sh_t :-(

Funny thing back when I put my 2500 CCNA lab together I got a 2520 or 2522 (I will post pictures of that lab soon - it was nice in it's day) and when it arrived it was BRAND NEW in the box, still wrapped in plastic with all the stickers that new routers have on them and all the books, CD's cables, rack ears etc. You could tell the box had never been open, I am sure it was aback up that sat in a closet "just in case".

I would have paid more knowing it was "new in the box" as many will - glad he did not list it that way :)

I got an 877 a couple of months back. Paid an obscenely low amount on eBay (around $100). When it arrived, it was in the original box, everything was sill in its original plastic bags with the seals. Couldn't tell if the router itself had ever been removed from the box. Still had the protective film on the face.

Bill,

It amazes me how people will sell things and not even look at what other things are selling for or how they are listed or what brings TOP DOLLAR (thank goodness).

Same for buying/bidding on Ebay - some people are idiots!!

Again, when putting together my 2500 lab a few years back I have a hub abd 3 spoke arrangement, one spoke was Token Ring, one spoke was all 2524 (the 2500 "moduler" router :))
This was a huge lab like 15 routers in all :)

I needed 1 more 2524 for that spoke and a guy on Ebay had about 30-40 of them for sale all ending at different times over a 5-6 day period, EVERY listing was EXACTLY the same other then the price, they went from starting bid of $60 to $80 with "buy-it-nows" for about $10 more then the starting bid, since he had soooo many out there, many people just put a bid in for like $1 more then the start and waited for the close.

I went to bed 1 Saturday night with a bid of $74 on one and in the morning I found I had lost it, in fact the bidding had gone to $135, I was shocked, they had 35 of them for sale last night, WTF, did someone corner the market on 2524 routers ??????

I did a quick search and low and behold there were still about 30-35 still up - all the same seller, same model, same dram, same FLASH, same IOS SAME SAME SAME SAME...... EVEN the same stock picture. I reread all the listing 3x along with the one that went for $135; with "buy-it-nows" for $80 ????? NEVER could find a difference.

Saw a buy-it-now for $76 and got it :) It came a few days later and worked GREAT.

I think people get caught up in the bidding and/or do not know how to search Ebay :)

Gene,

Ype, some people just don't think. Saw a WIC-1ADSL bid up to about 130 with a ton of Buy It Now listings for 70 to 100. Totally stew pud.

Bill,

Not bad and the shipping is not outragous, I might have to watch those for the next 6 days :)

I've been watching. The 3660s aren't moving. Been watching the prices go down with no bidders. It used to be a stretch to get one for $140, now its Buy It Now for $115 (inc. shipping) or Best Offer.

Considering their horsepower, they might be a good investment, especially with home and small business broadband speeds going through the roof (did I just hear 60mbs on cable?).

LOL... that thing looks like someone was pissed at their IT boss and was gonna prove a point... makes you wonder where in the world that office was located to get a box that destroyed...

Bill,

I was looking up the 3660's and 3745's (speed wise) when you said - "Considering their horsepower, they might be a good investment, especially with home and small business broadband speeds going through the roof (did I just hear 60mbs on cable?)."

You would need to get in a 2851 or higher to get better speed :) Other then the sheer bulk and power use for the typical home network, these really might not be a bad option if you can get them with enough DRAM and FLASH as well as a good security IOS!!!!

DallasBPF suggested a USPS issue when he speculated:

"LOL... that thing looks like someone was pissed at their IT boss and was gonna prove a point... makes you wonder where in the world that office was located to get a box that destroyed..."

I'm not sure. Maybe the problem is that they used UPS to ship it. ;)

Its a tall box, but not nearly as deep as a 3640. DRAM is cheap (newegg.com still sells it for PCs!), flash isn't to bad.

As for a good security IOS, what would you suggest? Enterprise Plus? Enterprise Plus IPSEC 3DES? Enterprise/FW/IDS Plus IPSEC 3DES? IP Plus? IP Plus IPSEC 3DES? IP/FW/IDS Plus IPSEC 3DES?

[the other] Bill

Bill,

I would think, depending on your setup at home, is it your border router and you already have a firewall, IPCop, another router etc. or do you want it to do it all.

Of course IP and IF you had enough DRAM so that it did not slow down as it did packet inspection, you would want the firewall (FW) plus Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and IP Security +3DES. I will have to look at the feature set and the needed FLASH for each, I think I would want all the DRAM I could manage since it should not be bad based on DRAM prices.

So it depends on exactly what role it will play in YOUR home network. I have always been taught security is best in layers and I like to practice this at home just as I would in the real world :) Some might call it over kill but I find I learn best when I am "playing" just as I would for real :)

Just some thoughts!
