Hi All,

I am having a few problems with a Cisco 3620 Router. It has been working fine for a long time, however all of a sudden it seems to totally forget its config and continously reboots after which it will eventually load the IOS, but I have will have to enter the config details again.

I have had a HyperTerm session running, to show what it has been doing when it reboots and forgets whats going on.

If anybody has any advice, I do appreciate it.

Cheers

router(config)#config-reg 0x2102
router(config)#end
router#wr

That will save the config and load the startup config into memory, if it reboots. Really, all you needed to do instead of rewriting the entire config was

router#copy start run

Then change the config register. You can confirm that it is wrong (0x2142) by sh ver---it will show what it is at the end of that output.

The rebooting sounds like a memory issue. Reseat it, and also check the psu fan/system fans...

Failing that, you might check whether your NVRAM flash memory is OK.

Hi Again,

Many thanks for your suggestions, I tried the steps outlined above but the router just restarted itself and seems to continously get stuck in a look where the bootloader starts.

Sometimes if I switch the router on, no lights at all will flash on the front and nothing at all is displayed in the terminal output.

I was wondering whether it is possible to replace the nvram?

Many thanks

Yes, but I would try the memory simms first. From rommon, you can see what config you can have with just 2 simms in there...can't remember the command...I would try it with just 2 simms to see if it reboots itself.

The NVRAM chip is socketed, and it sits next to the boot ROM...they look the same, so I am not sure which is which. They are interchangeable with those of the 2600 series too...

unixm,

Are you getting any error message before it reboots? I got a 3620 on Ebay and it had this problem -
Cisco 3620 OIR Interrupts, Power Problems

Field Notice:
FN-1997-335-1 RCN R97-3714, R97-3757

Products Affected:
CISCO3620, CISCO3620-CH, CISCO3620-DC, CISCO3620-RPS, PWR-3620-AC=, PWR-3620-DC=, ACS-3620RPS=

Problem Description:
The power supply connector in the CISCO3620 sometimes does not make good contact with the motherboard power connector. This leads to low voltage on the motherboard...........

But you should see an OIR error! Look back right before it reboots!

Thought this might help since it was a 3620 and is rebooting! Mine would start this after anywhere from 5 to 15 min of running and would not do it all the time.

It just all the sudden would reboot - hope this helps!
