cisco 2950 switch no flash dir 1

I hold the mode button after plugging in the switch for 5 seconds it flashes amber. The switch boots to switch: I do a flash_init then load_helper finally I did a dir flash: it comes up with nothing in the flash directory. How do I get the switch to boot normally again? I read something about xmodem and using hyperterm in order to copy an IOS bin file back into flash so I can boot normally again. Any ideas?
