Hey guys,

I'm trying to set up some vlans on my switch, i connected via hyperternimal got into the switch, as soon as i try to do the first command (conf t) it gives me the message - "Usage: configure <host> <file> [rcp]
Usage: configure network". I've never seen this before. am I missing something in the syntax. how do i get past this so i can put in the next command "interface FastEthernet1/0/1"????

Any Ideas?

Are you sure its a 2950 because it sounds like you're trying to configure a set-based (CATOS) switch. I've included a link below for a command reference for set-based switches but, in short, to achieve what you want to do on this kind of switch you just start configuring once in enable mode. For instance to create a vlan 2 called test for instance, you do the following: 'set vlan 2 name test'

Of course the switch will need to be a vtp server before you can create a vlan. Use the 'set vtp' command to configure a vtp server.

Sounds like the config register is not right and it loaded to a point where it is asking you how want to configure it . The register is normally 0x2102 for it to load correctly . You may have to reset to factory defaults.

by-Step Procedure

Follow the password recovery procedure below.

1.

Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation (for example, Hyper Terminal) to the console port of the switch.

Use the following terminal settings:
*

Bits per second (baud): 9600
*

Data bits: 8
*

Parity: None
*

Stop bits: 1
*

Flow Control: Xon/Xoff

Note: For additional information on cabling and connecting a terminal to the console port, refer to Connecting a Terminal to the Console Port on Catalyst Switches.
2.

Unplug the power cable.
3.

Hold down the mode button located on the left side of the front panel, while reconnecting the power cable to the switch.

For 2900/3500XL and 3550 series switches: Release the mode button after the LED above Port 1x goes out.

Note: LED position may vary slightly depending on the model.
For 2940 and 2950 series switches: Release the mode button after the STAT LED goes out.

Note: LED position may vary slightly depending on the model.
