We are trying to set up a 2948. When we try to bring up an FE port (no shutdown)it comes up then immediately shuts down. This is the status below:

FastEthernet1 is down, line protocol is down
Hardware is epif_port, address is 0001.4343.6407 (bia 0001.4343.6407)
Internet address is xxx.xxx.xxx.250/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
Auto-duplex, Auto Speed, 100BaseTX
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output never, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Queueing strategy: fifo

We have limited Cisco knowledge and we are a bit confused.

Thanks
Paul

Is there something plugged into the port? If not it won't stay up. Becasue this is a switch you will need to use cross-over cables if you are connecting to other switches or hubs.

We've got a laptop plugged into one port and a cross-over to another active non-cisco switch on another poer. We have a console cable into the console port.

Cables are working we tested them against another system.

That should work out of the box..... What laptop is it? Maybe its a speed/duplex issue. I have installed some of these switches a while ago and didn't have too many issues, certainly no link down issues. If the laptop is new does it have a 10/100/1000 interface? if so this may be causing some problems. Have you got a 10/100 NIC-equiped PC to try?

Andy

it's an older D600 (10/100/1000 NiC) from Dell. My newer D620 was able to telnet to it yesterday before we wiped it down.

I'm out of the office right now . We were wondering if there could be a problem with the IOS. I cannot see what the problem could be.

Can i provide you with any other data you could maybe look at?

Thanks
Paul

It's probably worth updating the IOS to the latest (12.0.25-W5.27d) which is still pretty old. The release notes are here:

I can't see anything specific regarding NIC compatibility but Cisco don't list all the fixes in the release notes.

My first instinct is to upgrade to the latest IOS and re-test.

on the laptop make sure its using AC power instead of battery. by default the NIC card on the laptop will turn off to save battery power if you use the laptop battery only.
