Cisco 2924: Utilization maxed out?

Hi,

i have a cisco 2924 switch set to 10/full because my netscreen 10 only supports 10MB. but with it at 10MB connected to the firewall or 100MB directly to the ISP
uplink i still seem to be maxing out the switch.

I click the button to see its use, and the lights are always maxed. im only using about 2MB of bandwith ( almost
2 t1's) and have 4 servers connected to it with intel pro 100 S server adapters. anyone know what this problem might be? do i need an additional switch?

Thank you
Sean

Sean, that doesn't seem right. I've connected around 15 heavily used servers into a 2924 before and not had problems with utilization. Check the interfaces and make sure there are not many errors. Are you trunking (vlans) to the servers? Do a show monitor and make sure you're not monitoring any ports or vlans.

thank you for your response.

the switch to my understanding is just set to
each port 10/full

there are no other settings in use. i know i only
use 2MB but the traffic is mostly text, so
2MB is about 2-3,000 concurrent connections, can this
be a problem?

i know it cannot be the switch. is there a way that i can show you the system config or the show commands output?

Thank you very much again

Sean

Sean, capture a "show config" on the switch and post it here (leaving out any passwords).

If there is something wrong, people here will let you know. A "show int" would also display error counters that could discover something.

thanks again, a paypal donation will be made to this website and to the person who can fix this problem for me.

Im greatful for the help! thanks again.

Sean

You do know that even at idle, the Cat2924 will show high utilization.. Its the way the switch is made. Unplug everything and the lights will stay the same..

Don't ask me why they did it..

so how do i really know if the switch is creating a problem? i notice problems most in my IRC chat room. lots of peer disconnections.

Thanks
Sean

I would clear the counters and check for any CRC / FCS errors to occur. Could be a patch lead problem?

A 10mbit link can only transfer 1.25mbytes of traffic. 8 bits for evey byte.

I notice you have collisions on ports 4 and 10 : you shoud have zero because the ports are Full Duplex.
More : there is late collisions ie collisions detected after the 512th bit transmitted which should not happen : there's a problem on the line not on the switch : bad cabling, or NIC or NIC driver or NIC configuration (eg parametered Half duplex).
Try to clear counters to see if these collisions always appear or were old ones (when you had other equipment connected on these ports).

SeanWest,
People are getting too carried away, although the reasons are all valid. Look at the basics. Note the ports that are set to 10MB speed, they are also set to full duplex. 10MB/Full duplex is not a standard. Although 100MB/Full duplex is. 10MB/Full duplex will work between Cisco devices (e.g. routers to switches) but not necessarily between switches and NICs. Also, a dead giveaway is the high number of late collisions. These should never happen on a properly configured and setup ethernet lan or interface. Also not very high CRCs and other errors. Those frames are having to be retransmitted again and again. So,
no speed 10, no duplex full on all interfaces, and let autonegotiate do its job. There is no harm in trying this, and I suspect it will resolve some of your performance issues. Chris
