Hi guys, i picked up a cisco 2611 router with no wic cards. Only has the 2 ethernet ports. What wic card do i need to look for to have a wan port that is 802.1q. I need to be able to set vlan tags to the wan port.

Thanks

You encapsulate on the ethernet interface with sub interfaces... What are you trying to do on the WAN?

Basicly we have a versipack that provides internet and private network to our other site off 1 ethernet connection on the versipack. The ISP told me that there was a vlan tag of 936 assigned for internet traffic, and vlan 224. So i need to find a way to assign my public ip addres with a vlan.

Are you using Metro Ethernet??

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

Hello
The 2611 will do just fine, under the conditions that it has a 16MB flash with the right IOS.I guess the ISP will be providing a RJ45 connection to the router. In that case do as Jeter says configure sub interfaces with VLAN ID's on the Ethernet interface.

Regards

So i will only need the 2 ethernet ports on the router? I never knew i could use a ethernet port as a wan port. I will give it a shot.

Think of it as just another ethernet connection. The only difference it that it is provided by your local telco.

You can use metro ethernet for site to site or internet connections.

A lot of providers will only drop off a rj45 fastethernet connection now , thus eliminating the need for a wan serial card in a router , technically you could also just use a layer 2/3 switch if you have that handy .

We have a L2 switch, just dont see where i could assign the public ip address. Networking has grown alot in the past few years, and i been mainly doing phone systems as computer work was getting old.
