OK, You will all think Im crazy, but I want to get into a
Cisco 2600 router for the first time with absolutely no experience in routers. (8 months IT total)
I want to know how to get into the initial setup for the first time. I read the book which says to connect a terminal emulation program to the router and the info will come up on the screen when it is started. Well it is already powered on. (by the guy who installed the hardware) I have a laptop with telnet set up but it wants a node name to connect to. I have no information as far as a name or ip address. Is their a generic name to get in the first time or something?

Your cisco router does not have a ip address until after it has been configured, initially you need to connect via the serial port. The router should have come with a serial cable, one end of which you need to attach to a PC serial port, adn the other end to the serial port on the router. You then use terminal software on the PC to connect to the router. If you are using Windows 9x then you already have the necessary terminal software, hyperterminal lite (if I remember correctly) under the accessories. You can then set the ip address on the eternet interface and use telnet to get in.

Thank you for the reply.
I setup a laptop with hyperterminal on win98.
The router only has an rj45 connection for the console but I had an adapter for the serial port on the laptop.
I created a connection in hyperterminal through com1 (com2 said no connection) There was also a choice ofor tcp(winsock)?? I powered the router down and up looking for the setup info I was told would come through the screen but nothing happens. The hyperterminal says there is a connection but nothing happening. It would not even type?I want to get to the cionfiguration screen that theymention on the first page of the manual, then I can follow the directions for a basic configuration. Any more thoghts.
Thanks again.

Hello,

Maybe this will help.

======================================

Connecting to the Console Port
To connect a terminal (an ASCII terminal or a PC running terminal emulation software) to the console port on the router:

------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1 Connect the terminal using the thin, flat, RJ-45-to-RJ-45 rollover cable (looks like a telephone cable) and an RJ-45-to-DB-9 or RJ-45-to-DB-25 adapter (labeled TERMINAL).

------------------------------------------------------------
Note The RJ-45-to-DB-25 adapter (Cisco part number 29-0810-01) can be purchased from Cisco.

------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2 Configure your terminal or PC terminal emulation software for 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 2 stop bits.

=====================================================
Hope it helps.

No, but thanks. Terminal emulation software is a very general term when you are new. I first thought it was telnet (actually told it was), but there was no connection possibility at all that I could see there ( needs host name or IP). Then on a recomendation went to hyperterminal. The hyperterminal console shows there is a connection (down at the bottom left) but nothing is happening and I cannot type input to try to get a response. The screen is a blank white screen. The book says lines will go accross your screen when you first power up the router but do not touch anything while this happens. Then you will be asked if you want to enter the initial setup. I cannot get to this point. The power was already up on the router, but we were told it is not configured. I shut down the router figuring it would start over and show the lines (configuration or whatever) going accross the screen when I powered it back up but nothing. Just ablank white screen that I cannot type commands on and a connection shown at the bottom right.

Hello.
I have had this same problem many times,
I use WINDOWS 98, Hyperterminal 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bits, flow control "none". The only other problem would be the cable between the Laptop (pc) and the Router Console port.
The cable I have is light Blue colored and a db9 adapter thats marked TERMINAL.

Sorry I couldnt help.

Really,
That may help a bit.
I am using an extra cable I found in our hub, and an adapter
I found in a box. But if that could be the problem why would the terminal emulation program be showing a connetion? and how do I know whenI am actually connected to the router and what would i look for? Thanks again.

Hello, I just did a test on my Laptop with nothing connected to the Serial COM port and ran Hyperterminal and
it showed "connected", so "connected" means nothing ( I just learned that today ).
Also compare the RJ45 cable ends, the wires will be rolled.
example
=======
RJ45-----------RJ45
pin 1 pin 8
2 7
3 6
4 5
5 4
6 3
7 2
8 1

Also, make sure that the adapter that connects the
RJ45 cable to the LAPTOP serial com port is marked "TERMINAL".

If the connection to Router works you
may see "LOGIN" or may see nothing, try pressing
the "ENTER" key on your keyboard.
You can try leaving Hyperterminal running, then power off/on
the Router, then you can see the Router initializing.

I found the cable ad the terminal adapter that the router came with and used them.
I still have no activity. I tried enter and also powered the router down and up but nothing. This is bad when you can't even get to the point where the directions start.

Well I'll have to say that everytime I try something new or try to learn something it always ends up being circumstances beyond my control. I don't even get a chance to f anything up. I tried another laptop with the same exact settings and it enters the router just fine. I double checked all the settings and tried my laptop again and got nothing. After all that, we only had to add a secondary ip address to the ethernet port on our already configured router. The other router they supplied didn't need to be touched. Fascinating stuff though, have to learn more.
