1. I'm studying for the CCNA and im stuck. How do you connect the cisco router to the internet? the router has a BRI port. I did some research and that port is supposed to connect to a ISDN modem. Can i plug the BRI port into my home internet modem? I have bright house cable.

2. Also, what is the main purpose of the serial ports on the router? Do i use DTE/DCE cables to connect two routers together? If so, in a real world situation i guess i would need longer DTE/DCE cables, because this cable is only 3' long.

3. Just to be sure, the AUI port is only to be used as a LAN interface is that correct?

A BRI port is isdn only so unless you have isdn in your house you can't use that . Serial ports are used to connect to modems or csu/dsu's . AUI is an old time ethernet interface in which you will need AUI (old thicknet connection)to rj45 converter if you want to use that , that router is really old and not really relevant in todays networking unless you just want to play around with it to get a feel on how comands work . You can play around with the serial ports and connect 2 routers together if you have the correct cables .

You have been really helpful. thank you. I bought the Cisco Network Acadamy program from ebay and i noticed that the copyright is dated 2000. Therefore, that would explain the BRI interface. I believe i still might pass the CCNA because the general concept still remains the same. What do you think?

1. What is the best router to purchse for studying for the CCNA?

2. What is the best study guide to purchase?

I just order CCNA CBT nuggets.

If you can find a used 2600 model those are a little more up to date and you can get the correct interfaces for what you want to practice . Usually the Cisco guides are pretty good for studying, some people like the Sybex books too .
