Hello,
I just bought a 2501 over enay to start my home lab setup. now the add stated it had 2 serial ints' and 1 ethernet when i go into the router and do a show int it shows 2 serial and 1 ethernet however physically on the back of the box it has 2 serial int's and a "AUI" this is the desription under the other int. it isnt an rj45 jack mor like a serial looking connection any ideas? I'm stumped thanks

You need an Ethernet Transceiver - AUI to 10Base-T/RJ45. You should be able to pick one up for under $25.

lol jdl508!
AUI stands for Attachment Unit Interface.
It's a 15-PIN physical connector also called DIX interface. It was used on Thick Ethernet (a fat coaxial cable also called Yellow Cable).
No worries, you can use an external transceiver (AUI to TP).
In any case speed is only 10megs.

regards,
Alain (an oldie...)

WEll thanks for the help guess i'm showing my years :)
Is this standard for the 2501, i have only worked with 2621's and 1700 series routers to date but this was affordable for home use. Thnaks again

Yes that is standard for the 2501, would have been nice of them to include the transceivers in the auction though.

The problem with using an RJ45 transciever is that it needs a device connected to it to bring the interface up, i.e a hub or a pc connected by x-over cable. In a Lab environment with multiple routers it is sometimes helpful to use a 10base-2 transciever. This can be terminated with a T piece and two 50ohm terminators to bring the interface up.
