mitmcse2k,
We all could write a thesis on how to do this, but it might be easier if you checkout the Cisco URL below, which has all the info you need on getting started with the cisco 2500 router. The Cisco Web site is a always a good source of info.
Ok! I guess you are asking abt console access to the 2500.
Do you have a flat blue or black cable with RJ45 connectors at either ends ? If you see the pins configurations at either ends, it will be exact mirror image(see color code of wires).
Once you get hold of this cable, you will also need a DB-9 connector. What the hell is a DB9 connector ?? Its an adapter that can be connected to the com port of your PC/laptop. One end of the connector is a female COM port and other end of the connector is an RJ 45.
So the wiring would look like this.
PC/Laptop --Comport--DB9adapter--Blue/black cable--console of router.
Now on the PC you will need a software such as Teraterm or Hyperterminal.
Open hyperterminal (start - > Run -> type in "hypertrm" and hit enter).
Open a new connection, select COM1 port if its COM1 port to which the router has been connected.
On the next screen Click the RESTORE DEFAULTS button and click OK. Now hit the RETURN key once or twice to get the router prompt.
