I have two locations. One with a PBX and the other about 4 miles away. They are connected with a leased T1 from local telco, and so I have a channel-bank and 24 analog phones at the remote location.

I also have a 40Meg Ethernet link connecting the same two buildings, which is used by our IT folks for the company LAN to work out there. They are using Cisco 1841 at both ends to route+secure traffic. Both of these Cisco-s also have a T1 WIC card in them, doing nothing.

Can I just plug my pbx T1 interface into the WIC card and extract that T1 on the WIC card of the remote router? This would be TDM over IP implemented by the Cisco 1841. I know if it's at all possible, my IT staff would have to configure those interfaces properly, but I'm just wondering: can it even be done?

Thanks.

I don't think you can as the NEC systems cannot act as the exchange end!

What are you trying to accomplish here? IP phones at your remote site possibly? Connection to a remote PBX?

At main location I have a 2400 ICS with a T1 card. At the remote end I have a channel-bank kind of thing that breaks out the T1 into 24 analog phone lines so that I can use 24 analog stations. I'm leasing the T1 from the phone company.
I have a 40Meg ethernet link between these two sites as well, so what I want to accomplish is to run this T1 over the existing 40meg Ethernet connection and get rid of the monthly fees for this T1. This is not for IP phones

From the way you are describing your setup you have channel banks on both ends of a T-1. You are basically connecting 24 analog stations from the 2400 and "extending" them across the T-1. You can do this easily by replacing the T-1 Channel Banks with VoIP gateways. Companies like AudoCodes make gateways to support this. You basically need a 24 port FXO equipped unit at the host site, and 24 FXS ports at the remote. The devices will convert to VoIP and use the data link instead of the T-1. You will need to make sure they have QoS configured correctly in the Cisco routers to ensure call quality.

However, it is easy to drop a couple grand on EACH of these devices. You may want to consider enabling some native VoIP in the ICS. I am not much of a 2400 guy, so I would call your dealer to see if this is an option on the ICS.

VoIP on the 2400 ICS would require an upgrade to the IPX (MFG Discontinued) or the new SV-8500.

Thank you gmannati. The 2400ICS is not VoIP compatible. It's a TDM system from 1998. I understand and know about the technology to convert the TDM to IP with the gateways you mention, and also know that they can be costly.

That's exactly why I posted my original question: can the cisco 1841 do such thing? Since I already have a pair of those, sitting at each end of the IP link, with an unutilized T1 WIC.

The last price quote from my vendor to upgrade the ICS to SV8500 was around $150,000....
