My company just bought a cisco 1750 router for their T1 connection from an auction. It looks like the router has been wiped of its firmware. When I connect to the router via serial port I get this

System Bootstrap, Version 12.0(3)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

C1700 platform with 16384 Kbytes of main memory

device does not contain a valid magic number

Question is how do I go about loading in the firmware? I did download the Cisco Configmaker and tried to update using that but it failed to even connect. Is there a tutorial to help me with this and also were I can get the IOS software for the router.
Thanks in advanced!

rommon1>dir flash:

Post that. As far as getting an IOS, email me at timandlizh at gmail dot com.

Ok this is what I got

rommon 4 > dir flash:
device does not contain a valid magic number
dir: cannot open device "flash:"

Thanks again!

Ok I think my flash is corrupt so I have to do the whole tFtp recovery method. So using the rj45 to db9 cable i opened up hyperterminal and did this

rommon 1 > set
PS1=rommon ! >
?=0

so now I enter my ip infor and the tftp server info

rommon 3 > IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 4 > DEFAULT_GATEWAY=10.1.10.1
rommon 5 > TFTP_SERVER=10.1.10.100 <----computer ip with Tftp Server
rommon 6 > IP_ADDRESS=10.1.10.110 <--- computer with TFTP server
rommon 7 > TFTP_FILE=
rommon 7 > TFTP_FILE=c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-11.T10(2)

SO then I run TFTPDNLD and I get this

rommon 9 > tftpdnld

IP_ADDRESS: 10.1.10.110
IP_SUBNET_MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY: 10.1.10.1
TFTP_SERVER: 10.1.10.100
TFTP_FILE: c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-11.T10(2)

Invoke this command for disaster recovery only.
WARNING: all existing data in all partitions on flash will be lost!
Do you wish to continue? y/n: [n]: y
...
ARP: address resolution for 10.1.10.100 timed out.
ARP failed with failure code 1. TFTP transfer aborted.

TFTP: Operation terminated prematurely.

What am I missing. Seems like its not resolving.
ANy Ideas?
Thanks

Ok update I saw a little mistake I did
So I run tftpdnld again and get this

rommon 19 > tftpdnld

IP_ADDRESS: 10.1.10.114
IP_SUBNET_MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY: 10.1.10.1
TFTP_SERVER: 10.1.10.100
TFTP_FILE: c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-11.T10(2)

Invoke this command for disaster recovery only.

NO watching the logs on the tftp server It
dosent show any attempted connections.

You need an ethernet cable for tftpdnld, not a console cable. If router is connected directly to the pc, the IP of the pc is the gateway, and the cable needs to be a crossover.

Burt

Ok so do i continue to use hyperterm to connect the router using the crossover cable?

Will I need a pc with two ethernet ports?
Since once i disconnect the pc from the network it loses its ip address. could i do this thru a switch or hub?

thanks!

ohh one more thing do i connect the cable to the "console" port on the router or the ethernet port?

Connect the cable (crossover) to the computer, other end to the router ethernet interface. Yes, you can use Hyperterminal. You will still need to console in at the same time, but the ethernet cable is used for the transfer itself. Set the router ip address to 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.252, and the pc IP address to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.252
You can do this through a swich, and for this a straight through cable will be needed.
You do not need two interfaces on the computer.

Burt

Thanks for the info this worked but then i ran into another problem. after the image boots up i get a password prompt!

Well ok so i thought i would just try another image but i cant upload it because of the password. is there anyway around this? I tried the break method after rebooting but it dosent seem to work or maybe im doing it wrong?

Thanks

mcraul,

To break the passoerd on a 1750 -

To send a break in Windows HyperTerminal, enter Ctrl-Break.

1) Turn the router off, wait 5 seconds, and turn it on again. Within 60 seconds, press the Break key. The terminal displays the ROM monitor prompt.

rommon 1>

2)Enter confreg 0x142 to reset the configuration register:

rommon 1> confreg 0x142

3) Initialize the router by entering the reset command:

rommon 2> reset

The router resets, and the configuration register is set to 0x142. The router boots the system image in Flash memory and displays the following:

--- System Configuration Dialog ---

4)Enter no in response to the prompts until the following message is displayed:

Press RETURN to get started!

5)Enter the enable command to enter privileged EXEC mode. Configuration changes can be made only in this mode.

Router> enable

The prompt changes to the privileged EXEC prompt:

Router#

6)Enter the show startup-config command to display an enable password in the configuration file:

Router# show startup-config

7)Enter the copy startup-config running-config command to return to your startup configuration:

Router# copy startup-config running-config

8) reset or change the password and any other changes you need, change the config register back to 0x2102 and do a copy run start to save your changes to the start config file.

This should work!

Turn the router off, then on, initiate a break, then
rommon1>confreg 2142
rommon2>reset

Then the router boots, and you answer the first question "no". Then
router>en
router#copy start run
router#conf t
router(config)#enable secret whatever
router(config)#config-register 0x2102
router(config)#line vty 0 4
router(config-line)#password bla
router(config-line)#login
router(config-line)#exit
router(config)#line con 0
router(config-line)#password bla
router(config-line)#login
router(config-line)#end
router#copy run start

As far as assigning an IP address to an interface...
router#conf t
router(config)#int s0
router(config-if)#ip address 157.130.78.146 255.255.255.252
router(config-if)#no shut
router(config-if)#end
router#wr

now what?
do i just hit enter?

ok so when i get this prompt

Destination filename [running-config]?

for fun i typed this
