I want to use this router as a firewall. A cisco sales person says that I need to purchase more memory. and that the router needs firwall software.

The router allows me to assign nat inside and outside to the ethernet. does that mean its firewall ready?

The router is a hardware firewall. Your feature set is an IP only feature set that will nat inside and out. If you want to enable a more advanced firewall solution you will need a IP/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 3DES feature set. The most current image will require 48mb main mem and 16mb flash mem. Those two chips will probably cost about $150 to $200 from EBay. The image is another story. Without smartnet you cannot download from Cisco and your only option is to use something like IOS hunter to find it online.
