I have a Cisco 1602 that asked me for a user name every time I telnetted into it and none of my other routers ever did. I would always forget what the username was so I went in and did a "no username" entry and now it will still ask me for a username but the one I have been using does not work. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, just post the output of sh run line vty 0 4 taking out any passwords and I will try to help you out....

I can't even gain access to the router because it will not let me past the username prompt. If there is a way around this I would appreciate the instructions.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
I guess this router is remote, or in a production environment, so you cant perform, 'normal' passwor recovery... there is another way, if you have an idea what the SNMP write community is on the router?

Cheers,
Fil.

The router is in production and it is remote, I think I know the write string. What can I do if I do know the write string?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy, in this case you will need console access to the unit.

hmm if I need to do a password recovery on a device and I know the write commstring I always put the configuration lines in a file and use a snmpset to upload that configuration to the router.

I think the OID is: .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.53.<tftpserver> octetstring configfile.txt

No need for console access.

WARNING!!!!Check if the .53 is right though (.53 is the hostConfigSet) It could be .50 (netConfigSet)

Maybe someone can tell wich one is the right one...

I would recommend trying it on a not operational device first. or wait untill someone says what the right one is or when I post back tomorrow with the right one from work.

The file would contain a config terminal. Then the commands you would type in on the cli of the router to reset the username and password. after that an end

config terminal
<commands to reset
username and password>
end

I wrote a faq to reset passwords using SNMP, Click the faq's tab at the top of the page.. it's near the bottom of the page.

Cheers,
Fil.

Follow up on my previous post. It should be .50

fynx,

Why download a file, manually edit it and then upload it again and login and do a wr mem, while all you need is a partially configuration on a tftpserver and a two snmpset commands?

Hi,
I agree, in this case, just set the command. The faq is deigned more to show that you can retrieve a config, edit it, and repost it using SNMP, rather than soley just for PW recovery.
Cheers, Fil.
