using sophos - not sure if any poor soul has it

i can setup a cistribution point on each server
replicated it to the sys:apache2\htdocs\sophos so that it can be an http update as well for these folk that struggle to login

problem is the client cannot install from a http , ftp or anything except a unc - an it wants a ms time as all you get is user name and pwd

if i setup cifs to this so we see it as say \\ganesha\sophos or something like that can i pass the username and pwd with cifs or not really work that way

as long as the simple password matches the work station user ID password (and the USER ID matches as well).

Remember, Simple Password and NDS Password are two different things. Save your self a head ache and just setup Universal password.

i thought that - it will not work then

it has to use an update username and pwd - ie centrally configured - so not the username of pc user

it really isn't that hard to setup if you use password self service

i know that but for this scenario i have it has to use a generic username and password - it isnt allowed to use the user who is logged in

the updates arent a problem - it's the installs - i had hoped that i could pass it this way to fool it but it's a non started

it works if i nal an app in the format

\\ganesha\sys\apache2\htdocs\sophos\esxp\setup.exe -user ".sophman.tree|tree|cn=ganesha.ou=virus.o=tree" -pwd password

but need to find a way to hide this as i dont even want it viewable in the app

well, one idea the plopped into my head was to wrap in in a compiled script.

Check out AutoIt. You just need a simple
Code:
RUN \\ganesha\sys\apache2\htdocs\sophos\esxp\setup.exe -user ".sophman.tree|tree|cn=ganesha.ou=virus.o=tree" -pwd password

Compile the script into an exe and bam, your done.

yep that looks the idea

amazingly hard things to find these simple tools

cheers will give it a whirl

You can't use Sophos Remote Update? Yes, it gets the updates via the http protocol from your apache server, but it's a completely hands-off process from the user's perspective, and it's really the best option.

The auto-update feature of the client side can also be set up to update from NetWare servers. I haven't set it up that way is a while, so my memory is fuzzy, but I seem to recall it requires going to the "advanced" portion of the setup when specifing what user/domain for the program to run as. In the advanced screen you get to enter the NetWare tree name, server, volume/folder, etc.

i can get the update part ok

the bit that i'm not getting is to install full client squirt from CID that resides on the netware server. i can fool it by script as above via a nal so it does a full install. at this stage it is really expected a m$ share

i'm still only half heartedly looking at it - i'm not overly happy with the product but some bean couter has bought thousands of licences for it as it was cheaper.
