I have been involved in CIF approaches. It will work quite well if there is a reasonably good Enterprise Data Model or if time is taken to build one. Without a good Enterprise Data Model, there will be problems, similar to those which would arise if you didn't build the Dimension Bus Matrix in the Kimball methodology.
Kimball purists would argue that considerable disk space is wasted building a 3NF Data Warehouse at granular level before building out the data marts. Generally, I agree, although there are applications where the 3NF Data Warehouse can be useful, for instance, real time Data Warehousing where the 3NF warehouse is populated by near-real-time replication from transactional or ODS systems.
