Working through a teach yourself book I thought I was getting the hang of things until I came to this question ...
For the IP address 10.217.123.7 give the CIDR equivalent.

I understand that under CIDR, the subnet mask notation is reduced to a simplified shorthand. Instead of spelling out the bits of the subnet mask, it is simply listed as the number of "1" bits that start the mask. But how do I find/work out what the subnet mask is?

Do they give you the subnet mask of that IP address? If not I would assume its a default class A mask and answer: 10.217.123.7/8

Thanks for the reply. That was helpful. As they don't give a subnet mask, I had guessed and tried exactly what you suggested (and got the same answer <g>) but wasn't sure that I was right.

On to the next chapter!

Thanks again.
