CID Telco Questions

Why do the telcos send CID data stream only after the first ring. It seems it would be better if the CID data stream was sent first then the ring. This way the user could always have the CID info. available if they want to answer their calls on the first ring.

I have to train my customers to wait a full ring before answering their calls.

I had heard a while ago that some telcos do send the CID info first. Is this an option I can request from my telco.
 
I guess because logically, your equipment would have to constantly be scanning the line for CID info. Not very practical. In passing, ANI is sent *after* you answer the call. If you find someone who sends CID before ringing, let us know.

The CID format in the USA or the NANPA was developed by the Bellcore folks in conjunction with other industry companies "post divestiture" of the Bell System. Those standards, and any modifications to them, is what we have today in the PSTN. You would have to do some serious research to find out why those formats were chosen over other types. A lot of the time certain standards or specifications are chosen as trade offs to be backward compatible with existing network functionalities and the cost of doing something or the limitations of technology.

Like everything else, there are always compromises!

In the UK, BT define the the start point for Call Waiting with Caller ID is the end of the first tone ON portion of the audible Call Waiting Indication.

So at the end of the 1st beep - the CLI information is passed as if it were the initial call.

they pulse the fsk between 1st and 2nd ring just like when the phone is on hook
