CICS Software Upgrade Problem

I'm trying to upgrade a working CICS system from 4.2 software to 7.1. I first powered down, removed the old software, installed the new software, powered up, and waited 20 minutes (actually about 40 minutes). The system would not boot up. Then I tried powering down, opening the cabinet and shorting the leads on the large blue capacitor located near the power plug for about two (2) minutes, and powering back up. Again, waited 20 or 30 minutes. The system still wouldn't boot. I finally installed another system that I had on hand, and got the customer back up and working. However, I'd like to get the original system working. ** Note ** Both systems (the one that did work and the one that did not work) are both Release 2 cabinets. Any help would be appreciated.

Put the old software back in and follow the upgrade procedure in the manual. you can't go from 4.1 to 7 in one jump.

Thanks Marv. I thought I remembered reading in one of the posts here that if you shorted the cap, you could "jump" the upgrade process. Apparently that's not the case. I'm sure that I have some interim version software somewhere, so.... upgrade it is.
I appreciate all of you who share your knowledge and experience on this forum, and I sincerely appreciate your assistance. Again, thank you.

You can but from your description I'm not sure you shorted the correct cap. Another way is to bring the system up with the 4.0 then do a STARTUP and while the display reads APPYING TEMPLET remove power. This should take the cabinet back to like it had no software on it at all.

Do this if it's ok to wipe out programming:
Fire the 4.2 back up, then within 15 minutes do a STARTUP
When it states "APPLYING TEMPLATE" power down the KSU.
Put the 7.1 in and power back up, wait.
Program as need.

Yea but curley if you notice my spelling is off most of the time......fewer letters saves time.

I don't mind losing the programming on the system. So when I get some spare time, I'll try starting the 4.2 software and powering down during the Startup process... and then installing the 7.1 software. I'll post the results.

On a different note, I've read several references/descriptions of this "shorting the cap process", but I've never personally done it, or seen it done. And this gap in my knowledge base is really starting to bug me.

The "capacitor" that's to be shorted has been described as being about the size of a quarter in diameter, with a thickness of (about) 2 stacked quarters. It's also described as probably being Blue in color.

There is a component fitting this description on the bottom portion of the circuit board, near the power plug. Maybe I should have checked it with a meter first (to insure that it was really a capacitor), but it was the only thing I found that seemed to fit the description. However, given my current success rate with this "shorting" process, I now have to wonder if my head wasn't completely up .... in the air. Anyway, does anyone have a pic (or know where I can get one) of this mysterious capacitor? I"ve gotta know if this works. Thanks guys.

Even better than a pic

More like a Nickel size and stack of 3 in my opinion.

Upon reflection, that's probably a better description than I gave. However, there's still only one component (that I've been able to find) on the board that fits this description. Consequently, if this cap is shorted when the flash card is out, the cabinet should be completely "zeroed" out. Correct?
Given that, I'm assuming that when you "Startup" the 4.X software, and interrupt the boot process (power down), you are actually loading some of the 4.x files for the "base line" setup, and that these "base line" files are not contained in the 6.X and up software. The higher version software then builds on the 4.x files to complete the upgrade. Is that correct? I apologize if I'm stringing this thread out too far. I'm just trying to get the full picture here. Thanks to all for your assistance.

My understanding is during startup when the phone first reads APPLYING TEMPLATE it is removing any thing loaded on the system and preparing to load whatever software you've just installed. Therefore if you pull the power about 3 seconds or so after the phone is reading applying template then you've stopped anything loading or at least anything important from loading from that software. So the cabinet is pretty much blank slate and will except whatever software you want to now put into it.
The second way to default is to short the cap out. If you short the cap then that removes the power to the memory chip set and the cabinet loses any programming on it.

Thanks for the info hawks. We're having a bit of weather here, so it may be a few days before I can actually try the upgrade we've been talking about. However, as soon as I get a chance, I'll give it a shot, and post the results. Again, thanks to all for your information and assistance.
