Hi,

As soon as I choose for WPA-Shared + TKIP (I have not tried other encryption options yet) although my connetion is still there but it doesnt seem to work. The small wireless icon still tells me that the connection is excellent, but IE stops working and also on right clicking the connection icon, does not repair it (the repair utility kind of hangs and then after some time says repair failed - Cannot renew the IP address).

It was working fine earlier, but now since I have a new set of linksys kit, its been giving me probs. My connection works excellent under open/no encryption mode, I dont understand why this is happening and how does one fix this.

Thanks.

thank you BCastner, your tips are always a big help. I'll try this when I get home in the evening.

As a side question, I need your advice on wireless computing:-
1.) which brand should one go for (linksys is the best but is very expensive) how about other brand which gives you a close to linksys performance?
2.) even in linksys, they come in two designs for G routers, the one with one antenna and the one with two antennas, if given a choice which one should we go for? Is there a performance difference between the two above mentioned designs (actually I dont know if you have tried this, anyway a rough idea as to which is better would be fine)
3.) you can choose to alter settings both from windows as well as logging in router settings, which one should be preferred and why? (suppose I disable wireless encryption in router settings but enable them through windows - this worked before for me though - then is this OK) or which way would you go?

Thanks again.

After applying the Wireless rollup Hotfix above, make sure you make the following registry change:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EAPOL\Parameters\General\Global]
"AuthMode"=dword:00000002

As to your questions:

q1: PC Magazine did a recent review of G Routers:
I still think the best deal is the WRT54G or GS, using Sveasoft firmware.

q2: The one antenna WRV54G has been a very serious disappointment to date. Major firmware fixes are promised, but I would stay away from the product. Use the regular WRT54G or WRT54GS

q3: Settings should be made first to the router through the web-based interface. Then your adapter should be configured under Windows to exactly match those settings. Settings need to be made in both locations and must match.

thanks BCastner, the info you gave is really very good.

Thanks.

Hi BCastner,

My router is now functioning, it has good speed. Just one problem left...which is when I start my system again, it shows the wireless connection as unavailable and doesnt connect to it automatically. I just then have to right click on the small computers icon in system tray->view available networks->advanced-> **** This is where everytime I have to check the box which says allow windows to configure your wireless setttings->OK. It then catches the connection and it runs fine till the next time I resatart my system.

Question: Is it normal that the check mark which says allow windows to configure wireless settings gets cleared automatically?
I believe there is a small glitch somewhere, otherwise once performing the above mentioned steps, my connection runs fine. It just doesn't connect automatically on starting the system.

As a side note I installed the updates from microsoft site which you mentioned. Also for the registry change, under global->there was no field which said auth mode, but still I made one entry as you said and gave it a value of 000002.

Its been almost two weeks that I have been trying to set up my wireless connection....it works but is really a pain to set it up, atleast for me it has been.

Thanks for your help.

Lets wait a few weeks for the final release of Service Pack 2 for XP.

The entire wireless configuration side has been redone, likely there will be new drivers for your NIC, and other changes I hope for the better.

You are right, the checkbox should not clear between reboots.

Make certain that you have defined the network connection (top box in the wireless connection property sheet), and added the same connection as the preferred connection (bottom box). Make sure you indicate that you only want to connect to secured networks, and that the networks are AP or infrastructure based.

I really appreciate your help. The information you gave has been very useful.

Thanks again.
