are there any resources that will point out the strengths of each distro & diffenreces, don't know quite which works well for what?

cheap and good hardwaredetection: knoppix.
even better hardwaredetection: kanotix.
most stable, but not allways a jour: debian.
most popular: fedora (formerly: RedHat) and SuSe.

I just recently switched from Fedora Core 2 to Gentoo. Gentoo is awesome if you want to customize the system to your needs without all the extra junk!
