Hi,

I need some advice and would like to know if anyone has accomplished anything similiar. I would like to create an import feature that allows the users to choose which field in the table the field in the file should be imported into. There will be multiple files in different formats and I would like the user to be able to control what fields in the table their fields in their files go into. For example 1 file may have field1, field2, field3 and when the user imports the file, he/she should be able to specify that field1 should be imported into the tables name field, field2 should import into the address field, field3 should import into the phone field, etc. I have no idea on how to accomplish this or if it's even possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Sounds like the Import/Export Wizard.

Yeah, I know you can use the import wizard and create import specs but I was hoping to avoid this. The import wizard doesn't show you the field names in the table so you need to know the field names and manually type them for each field. I was thinking more along the lines of a dropdown that allows you to choose a table field name for each field in the file.

I always import into a temporary table. If you did it this way, then when your users try to append the data to an existing table, the QBE screen gives you drop down field lists for the table chosen.

Your users should be able to cope with this level of technical involvment (ie Query Screen) otherwise you shouldn't be letting them near your database.
