Hello,

I would like to assign a server name (i.e. myprimarydomain.com) on a server running many name based domains.

I can't understand the method used to create the reverse resolution on the IP address. For example when I make a traceroute on the ip the resolved host is one of the domains on the server.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

This question of yours for me to answer is somewhat open ended and has several aspects of it to find what you need.

First is this reverse dns question? You can alias the IP to multi domains in reverse DNS
but this can get tricky also. traceroute its self will always show the primary domain of that box. If you need nslookup of IP to show the domain it will only come up as an alias
only after it shows the primary box's domain. No way around this actually less you lock
reverse dns into only one domain for the lookup. what ever is in reverse dns will show up which i take it you need more than one.

Second if this is for web server or virtual hosting there is no need for reverse dns. The referring web server will use a httpd.conf command "UseCanonicalName On" and also have "Bindaddress *" in config then the httpd running when site is hit will lock on this IP under the domain name hitting it.

There are other answers I could give but as you can see this to me is open ended on what your asking.
