I am trying to delete files on the server. Before I delete the file, I set the file's chmod to 0777, but I get

"Warning: chmod(): Operation not permitted" error message.
How can I solve this?

Why would you chmod the file first?

If you have permission to change the permissions of the file, chances are you already have permission to delete the file.

Try chmod as a different user. There are different ways to handle the file as different users via PHP, telnet, shell, FTP, etc...
