chmod permissons denied for root

Hi,

I am trying to change permissions for a group with the command chmod g+r filename.
I get the error chmod:WARNING can't change filename

How can this happen when I am logged in as root?

I just want to give the group permissions.

hi,
have you nfs-mounted this fs ? (are these file on another host : see df output )
