When chkdsk is verifying my hard drive, I get an error message:
File segment 7044 is unreadable

and this goes on File segment 9602. Then, chkdsk tries to correct it, but I get another error message:

Insufficient disk space to hotfix unreadable file 7044

and so on until 9602 (which btw, is a very long process)

What's odd is that I have about 70 gigs out of 115 gigs of space left on the drive. This hard drive is an external one that is connected via a firewire cable. I tried running chkdsk at startup but get the same message.

Another oddity is that after I run chkdsk from the cmd prompt and then click on the "My computer icon" drive e: (the connected external hard drive) does not exist.

Does anyone have suggestions? I would appreciate it very much.

I'm having this problem too; chkdsk is telling me there is not enough disk space to hotfix the unreadable files. I would love to solve this; it's going to take days for my 160GB drive to be checked and I don't even know if it will do anything!

Which brings me to another question...can anyone recommend drive repair software? Norton's won't work for me because it does not handle the NTFS format and that happens to be what I have on my drive. I've heard something about Spindoctor being good, but can't find anything on it.

Thanks for any feedback!!!

Can you run manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the drive to see if its ok/failing? (normally on their website).

What do you mean by 'drive repair'? (do you mean file recovery? I presume you don't mean physical repair, as you're talking about software).

I wasn't able to find a diagnostic utility by the manufacturer (Medea). I don't know if they have this; earlier I talked to tech support and they hadn't mentioned it. BTW, tech support thought I might possibly have a drive problem and told me that I could send it in to be checked. I just thought I would try to recover the files before sending it off.

And you're right...I meant file recovery (I probably need some file recovery for my own mind!)
