Running WinXP, with a Maxtor 30 gig Ultra ATA 100, I get chkdsk on every boot. I have let it run and it comes out clean, I have let it run and it comes out dirty. I had been using the Promise Ultra ATA, but switched it to reg IDE and there is no dofference. I have also run Maxtor's Powermax program and it comes up clean. Yet, XP says there is a problem on the drive. I have also noticed that system restore no longer works, it says the directory is not empty...related? In the event logs it shows an NTFS error, but of course, the help site has no information on my problem. I have come across some corrupt files in Photoshop, but nowhere else. There was an update for the promise drivers that windows says was supposed to fix this exact problem, but after installing them several times, it still happens.

I'm about at wit's end. I hate to simply edit the registry to turn off the auto check...that's like cheating. There has to be something causing it. Half the time it's clean, half the time it's dirty. I have dropped about 5 gigs of programs and data onto RW cds, expecting a total failure t any moment, and I can't run defrag either because it says chkdsk is scheduled to run.

Any ideas?

Yes, since you already did the 1st thing that I would have recommend, which was run the MAXTOR diagnostic software, I would suggest reposting this in the Windows XP forum, since I really don't believe it is hard drive related. (Well, not as much as it maybe software & Windows XP related, like the NTFS issue)

On Promise controller: I could NOT use a Promise ATA/100 controller with Windows XP Pro. Had to toss it after many hours of dicking around with it.
* However, the Promise ATA/133 controller works just fine. ( I am using one right now with XP Pro, and the other one is on a customers computer)

Actually, I have posted this, though the magic of copy 'n paste, on every forum I could find including the Microsoft forum. Although there are additional problems which I have stopped adding, to keep the posts breif. I was hoping to focus on the HD problem and tackle the rest later. However, they may all be related.

The additional problems include daily crashes with the blue screen code of IRQL_not_less_or_equal and occassionaly it changes to Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal. The numeric codes accompanying it also are cinstantly different. Sometimes it's 0x00000000, or 0X00000044, or 0X00000008 and so on. Also it will sometimes say the problem is with usbsys.sys or pcx2unic.sys.

I have been told that my problem may be ram related, because of the IRQL messages, bu the ram has been swapped out several times since this sleighride began. I also have been noticing a commonality with other people using Asus motherboards with the Promise controllers. Would my hard drive qualify to use any others or are they part of the board? Can I override the Promise chip on the motherboard and use the Maxtor drivers? Or even the 133 drivers?

The HD is 5T030H3, 30 gig, Ultra ATA 100, 7200 rpm. Any further help would be appreciated.

I went ahead and reformatted in FAT32. I did, get another error though, while reinstalling software. Again, nothing on the MS knowless base on it.

Event ID: 11
Source: disk
Message: dmio: RAID-5 %2 entering degraded mode operation

Anybody know what this means?

sorry to bust your bubbles, I just read about this problem and confirmed by ms, I will look it up and post where you can find a solution.

Thanks a bunch. I just d/l'ed the fix and everything has been cool for about 20 hours.
