I had errors trying to do an acronis backup of our D partition raid 5
array.. it was stating the drive may contain errors.. so I ran chkdsk/
f..

Its reporting:

"replacing invalid security id with default security id for file xxxx"
over and over..

It then says fixing mirror copy of the security descriptors data
stream.

Chkdsk discovered free space marked as allocated in the master file
table (MFT) bitmap.. etc

Is this type of security error normal.. I find it hard to believe
there could be anything wrong with a fairly new and stable raid5
array.

**This morning I found that the everyone group was removed from the security settings on a few of my folders that are shared on the network too.

Thanks

looks normal. happen to me twice. :)

last time it happened when we had a power failure that caused a spike that also killed our UPS -- server shutdown unexpectedly.

what you can do is:
- get all necessary updates for the server
- make sure raid firmware is not out of date by a lot
- a clean power source

Well.. we have monitoring software that would tell me if the server shutdown unexpectedly..

My acronis backups ran fine for the last week, till the one day a few days ago (no power failures).

Its frustrating as I had to go in and reset security settings in a lot of different places (the ones i know of so far).

I'll check on the firmware update for my 3ware card though (i'm guessing i have to shutdown/reboot to update though).

Curious.. what size UPS are most people using since you mentioned UPS.

We have 5 servers.. currently running off of two 950 watt APC ups with graceful shutdown (remote reboot) software..

but we are going to be switching to this unit at some point ($4500 vs about $550 per 950 watt unit):

surt7500xlt-1tf3

6000 watt for 5 servers (and networking equipment) may seem high, especially given our current max load of around 3000 (i think), but it allows for room to grow.

a good UPS is needed for your server because it normally has some kind of power conditioning functions in there to filter out spikes..etc. These spikes won't cause a power failure but may cause the RAID card to write some bad blocks on your disk :)

Optimal load for USP is <=80%, so 3000 load would need more than 3750. anything above 3k. i didn't check the APC unit you want, but looks like 3k x 2 and not expandable?

before you buy, make sure
1. 6k will give you max load of 4800
2. whether this unit is expandable if you go over
3. plan it for 3 years

if you go over and end up buying another one, it will be more expensive to get modular unit which you can fill in slowly.

Cool.. thanks for the tips.

Yeah our existing dual UPS's send a warning if there is a spike in voltage and compensate as well.

I think the 6000 watt unit is expandable (or at least you can add battery packs to it).

If not, I'm not sure what a good example of an expandable (6000 watt starting) unit would be?

Our budget is around $4500 on the unit though.

I also checked the firmware on our 3ware 4lp.. its up to date apparently too...
