Some things I'd greatly appreciate assistance on troubleshooting.

XP Pro IE6 SP2
CPU P4/2.4CGHz 800M 478P/512K HT RT
VGA ASUS|RADEON R9600SE/TD 128M 8X
CD MS|WIN XP PRO w/SP2
HD 40GB|WD 7200RPM 8MB WD400JB
MB ASUS P4P800 DELUXE SPRINGDALE RT
DDRAM 1GB PC-3200

Ran a chkdsk the other day and it found errors:

Microsoft® Windows DOS
©Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

C:\DOCUME~1\LISA>chkdsk
The type of the file system is NTFS.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Security descriptor verification completed.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

39070048 KB total disk space.
6041324 KB in 33651 files.
10912 KB in 2479 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
114780 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
32903032 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
9767512 total allocation units on disk.
8225758 allocation units available on disk.

So I then ran chkdsk /F:

C:\DOCUME~1\LISA>chkdsk/f
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Y

Rebooted and it did go thru all the motions

But the errors keep coming back

So went to Event Viewer...Got some warnings on MsiInstaller, Event 1004

Except there's no info on the MSInstaller error I can figure out or find.

If I go to Microsoft on the clickable link it says "We can't find info on this error".

That's definitely a help, and I thank you for taking the time to post it.

Additionaly, does anyone know what would be causing that message "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process"? This isn't the first time I've been faced with that, but it's been long enough that I cannot remember WTF caused it.

That message basically means that Windows (or something else) currently has access to the drive. Chkdsk cannot run unless it is the only process to have access to the drive.

Hence the reason that it asks you to schedule the chkdsk for the next reboot.

I think you can also use safe mode to run chkdsk, that way no other progs will have hold of it.
