Just recently, my system boots up and does a chkdsk after which it doesn't boot at all. I turn the machine off and try to boot to safe mode and there is no bootup. I turn it off and on again and it works fine. (by the way chkdsk finds no errors)any idea how to disable chkdsk except when I want to run it ?

Start backing up your valuable data your harddrive might be on the way out. You can download free diagnostic tools for your drive from your drive manufacturer's site.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
