After the first successful DVD burning session, XP computer slowed down to a crawl. I restarted and BSOD appeared. Powering down and back up again, chkdisk ran and dozens of windows appeared reporting numerous 'missing file' errors. I rebooted again into 'last known good configuration' but chkdisk runs on every subsequent restart.

I ran a full test on the hdd with Maxtor Powermax and it passed. System seems to be normal except when rebooting. Any suggestions as to an easy fix, short of reformatting, would be most appreciated.

Did you try looking for the chkdisk command by typing "msconfig" in "Start->run"? It could be in there somewhere to boot every time you start windows. If that doesn't work much I found this somewhere -->

Run Regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager. Now double-click on BootExecute. When the dialog box opens, change the value to autocheck autochk * and click on OK. Close Regedit. When you restart, chkdisk will not run.

If you want to make a .reg file to import it instead, just copy the info below and paste it into a text file and rename the extension from .txt to .reg, then double click the file to import into the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"BootExecute"=hex(7):61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,65,00,63,00,6b,00,20,\
00,61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,6b,00,20,00,2a,00,00,00,00,00

Weird thing is on my PC the key doesn't even exist, so I'm guessing if it doesn't, you use the import ?

Thanks for your response. After weeks of trying all the suggestions, including the one you sent, I found no solution until I set the page file to zero and then resetting it to the normal value. I set a page file to zero on all of my drives and partitions except that one. Then, I booted into my other XP installation and repeated all the same steps from that O.S.

After that, CHKDSK ran only on my second internal drive and my external drive. After disconnecting all USB and firewire connections, I booted into BIOS and reset to defaults. From there, my system has rebooted successfully several times without running CHKDSK at all. I have no idea what it was that really did the trick and I'm still not holding my breath. In the past couple of weeks, my system failed even to see BIOS at all; it wouldn't go further than ...checking LVRAM.....

Trying one stick of memory at a time didn't help but unplugging all USB and Firewire devices did...and this happened three times within a week. The past few days have been easy going and I hope it stays that way. Thanks again for your input.
