Does Google offer an "untranslate" service? [tongue]

There is a YouTube video (sorry, don’t have a link to it) of a song from Frozen (last year’s animated movie) where somebody took English version of a song’s lyrics, used Google to translate it (into Spanish, I think), and then translated it back to English. Hilarious.

Have fun.

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

Reminds me of the famous Mark Twain and his "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", where he back-translated a French translation into English (Clawed Back Into a Civilized Language Once More by Patient, Unremunerated Toil). Wonderful!

There is a website dedicated to these things

Oh, yeah, the good ol' Babelfish wringer. Run the Gettysburg address through it a few times. Classic.

Or of his translation of the Tale of the Fishwife and its Sad Fate as part of his essay The Awful German Language (well worth a read if you've ever tried to learn German).

Yep!
Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him till he emerges on the other side of his Atlantic with his verb in his mouth.

Well, you can do that, but it's bad style. Short sentences are recommended from many professional writers, because of the german grammar and sentence composition.
I know that essay of Mark Twain. In a part it's accusations are wrong. He talks about false friends, for example, words which look familiar but mean something totally different. That's wrong criticism, yet amusing.

To illustrate: A few years ago I came across someone who became desperate with a website offering polls. The poll options she entered were translated from english to german, as the site was english. Though the poll options she entered were already german. That was just because the browsers had that feature turned on by default. The german article "die" (the german feminine form of "the") was automatically recognized as english word and translated "back" to german with "sterben" (to die, dying), whcih shows how bad such features still are, not sensing semantics and context and simply assuming all text an english site shows is english. It wasn't a fault of the site, it was a fault of her browser, nobody understood her, until someone made a remote session via teamviewer to see her browser in action.

Bye, Olaf.
