Child Domain Still Visable

Due to a misconfiguration I have recently had to remove a child domain from our setup. There were 2 domain controllers in the subdomain and i successfully ran dcpromo on these and removed them from the domain without issue. When I ran dcpromo on the last dc it acknowledged that it was the last dc in the domain and that it was going to delete the domain.

However when I try to run dcpromo on either of the servers to recreate the domain it accepts all information goes off and replicates all the objects from the root domain then fails with the following error.

CN=childdomain,CN=Partitions,CN=Configuration,DC=rootdomain

Please check the event log for possible system errors.

There is no relevant information in the event log.

I have left it over 3 days since deleting the child domain but when browsing through active directory the sub domain is still there which leads me to beleive that it has left some configure information behind.

I have run the ntdsutil but the domain is not available in the selection list.

Its very inportant that I recreate the domain with the same name.

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.
