I thought this might be fun and educational as well. How many different languages can we come up with a common toast in? I've got the following list, although some of them I only assume are toasts from being grouped with other I knew, and I don't know the lanuage(s) for most of them:
[cheers]
Code:
Cheers! English/American
Prost!
Prosit!
Nastrovya! Russian/Polish
Opah!
A vos sante!
Slainte! Gaelic
Salud!
L'chaim! Hebrew
Saharac!
Ekeshekera!
Skol!

"Salud" means "health", and I always wondered how can someone say to you "to your health!", when we all know alcohol is bad for your health.

Well, I didn't know about resveratrol
Wikipedia said:
It now seems clear that regular consumption of up to 1-2 drinks a day (1 standard drink is approximately equal to 5 oz, or 125 ml, of 13% wine) does reduce mortality, due to 10%–40% lower risk of coronary heart disease, for those over the age of 35 or so.

TheRambler: I just heard on the news yesterday that there's now a new study that refutes that previous study.

That's one of the reasons that I pay VERY little attention to ANY studies. Usually you can prove pretty much anything you want.

The latest study I heard of, was published this month by the British Medical Journal. It is about the Mediterranean diet, which encourages moderate consumption of alcohol, to increase longevity among elderly people.

Yesterday I read the results of another scientific study:
Is your boss a psychopath?
Case studies by psychologists have claimed that "successful psychopaths" really exist. These are portrayed as emotionally detached, with superficial charm and an unbounded preparedness to use others, differing only from personality-disordered criminal psychopaths in being law-abiding and less impulsive.
I agree, there are all kinds of studies.

To stay on topic, here is The List of Cheers ! although I don't know how accurate it is.

They studied my last boss???

By my calculations, I'll liver to be 228 years old.

>They studied my last boss???
Board and Fritzon found that three of 11 personality disorders (PDs) were actually commoner in managers than in disturbed criminals. The first was histrionic PD, entailing superficial charm, insincerity, egocentricity and manipulativeness. There was also a higher incidence of narcissism: grandiosity, self-focused lack of empathy for others, exploitativeness and independence. Finally, there was more compulsive PD in the managers, including perfectionism, excessive devotion to work, rigidity, stubbornness and dictatorial tendencies.
I don't know, but my boss fits this description too.

>By my calculations, I'll liver to be 228 years old.
I hope you do, but if you don't, at least you might die happy.

If that study about alcohol consumption has made it into Widipedia then it's already out of date. This latest study I heard about came out just this week, and says that they have found NO correlation between moderate alcohol consumption and increased longevity.

Back on topic:
Never mind! It seems like everything you try to do has already been done by someone, somewhere, and posted on the internet.

Hi Tracy,

to add a bit language info to your list:
Code:
Prost!, Prosit! = German
Na sdarovje! Russian
À votre santé!/A la vôtre!/Santé! = French
Egészségére!/Egészségédre = Hungarian (1st to elder person, second to younger)
Skål! = Swedish

Hope the special chars get displayed correctly...

Since studies of this type tend to either reinforce the preconceived ideas of those conducting the study, or of those commissioning the study, the results are suspect at least to some degree.

I guess I'll stick to the British Medical Association's results and enjoy another glass!

Okay, okay, "liver" should have been in quotation marks (it was intentional, after all!)

My theory: we all have so much alcohol we can consume in our lives, and some of us just don't pace ourselves!
