our dbcc's are timing out.. running checktable on datarow locking table with 5 million rows and checktable is not finishing below 8 hrs..any ideas why it takes so long?

It could be a number of things. Can you please verify the following
1) sybase version
2) total or max sybase memory
3) Are you using "dbccdb" database. In that case is it configured with enough resources and worker processes?
4) Is this table busy when you are running dbcc on it? For example your batch processes at night are accessing the table.
4) any other info you may find relevant!

sybaseguru.. thanks for responding.. i missed it last time i was logged in here is the info

ASE 12.0.0.4 EBF 9972
total memory is 3.5 GB
yes using dbccdb.. has recommended resources from evaluatedb
it has 11 worker processes
- it's running on a Sunday.. nothing else runs then.. i moved it there because it was running into our trading day..

thanks again

markmar1..

dbcccache is at 200 MB and yes i have 16K io defined...

I heard that Sybase v12.0 had a paging problem.
Think about upgrading to 12.5

apologies I cam back to this today. If you are still seeing this problem do a sp_help and sp_spaceused on this table and send it please. In addition can you also do a sp_plan_dbccdb on your server and send it as well.

sybaseguru.. thanks!!! is there a email i can send the output to.. sp_help is kind of big...

here is sp_spaceused:

name rowtotal reserved data
index_size unused
-------------------- ----------- --------------- ---------------
--------------- ---------------

(return status = 0)
sp_plan_dbccdb
2> go

Recommended size for dbccdb database is 1621MB (data = 1619MB, log = 2MB).

dbccdb database already exists with size 2400MB.

Recommended values for workspace size, cache size and process count are:

dbname scan ws text ws cache process count

Send the e-mail to mich@peridale.co.uk.

Also please do select @@version on the server (I Think you have given the version, I need to know your O/S as well).

Please also do "uname -a" on data server on O/S and state whether you are using this host for anything except this sybase server just to make sure

Sorry forgot to ask, Is this table or database is bind to a private cache (as opposed to default data cache)?
