checkpassword/TLS/smtp authentication troubles

Hello all,

I am trying to configure my qmail server to use the starttls-smtp-auth.patch. I applied the patch, made the required cert, reinstalled the qmail binaries, and changed my smtpd run script (using svscan for control) to include the line /bin/checkpassword /bin/true. Obviously, I'm using checkpassword for authentication.

I can get smtpd up and running, and I can send mail in PLAIN mode, but I cannot do it when I configure my remote mail client (mozilla 1.1)to use SSL. The server does issue a certificate and prompts me for a password. When I enter my user name and password and press enter, the server tries to authenticate, but then just pops up the username/password dialog again. And it keeps doing that....

From the server end, I can't see anything going wrong. No weird log messages, and ps -ef doesn't show anything funny.

I also tried the server using Outlook Express 6...same result.

Anyone have a clue as to what is going on? I'm lost at this point...

Thanks in advance to all who reply.
