Hi all,

We are running a primarily Windows network and was wondering if there is an open source application that woudl enable us to see who on the network are:

1. streaming/downloading music the most

2. taking up most of our bandwidth.

Some users are streaming so much that others think the connection is down but is not because of all the streaming.

Our shop is small and we don't need anything sofisticated.

Any ideas on how we can keep achieve this?

What I could recommend ist the installation of a proxy server. I am not experienced on all servers, but I have used Wingate from Qbik.
With this server you have the possibility to restrict internet access to special workstations dependent on the service and to log the complete internet traffic.
There are different service levels dependent on the requirements in the Price range from about 50 USD up to 500 USD.

Are you looking for open-source software that will run on Windows, or are you ready to jump into an open-source OS as well?

Most (if not all) linux distributions come with an application called etherape. It will provide a graphical representation of who is talking to whom, and how much bandwidth they are consuming.

Most linux distributions also come equipped with squid, and open-source proxy server. There is a tremendous amount of information available to configure squid to limit people's access to various services. It can also be configured as a "transparent" proxy, so that you don't have to change the configuration of any of your web clients.

But you could also just download ethereal and filter on the streaming protocols. It will tell you exactly which IP addresses are receiving the streaming downloads. Ethereal runs on both Windows and *nix platforms.

I have a very detailed program called "Big Brother". However they have a smaller version called of course "Little Brother".
