Is there a way to check if a udp port is woring ?

I have a server in a dmz on which I'm having problems getting NIS to work. The firewall guys claim the ports are open. I can test the tcp ports used by NIS using telnet but how do I test the udp ports ?

I've always put a NIS slave in the DMZ because of rpc port mapping. One time, you could have it right, but after a reboot you have it wrong. But I think the ypserve stuff can be or is fixed to a port.
