I am very new to Win XP and still stumbling my way round trying to do things that were so easy in Win 98.

How do you check the number of files in a folder/directory?

In Win 98 I selected the folder I wished to check and right clicked to bring up Properties and this would count and display the files/folders. I want to know how many image files are on a CD (far too many for me to count) and could find no way of checking this. How do you do it?

You should be able to do this in exactly the same way as you did in 98. What happens when you try?

Right clicking did not bring up any options that included Properties.

You won't be able to do this if you're right clicking on the CD drive in My computer. Try opening the cd to see the files, select them all and then right click, properties. This should give you the information you need.
Your old method will work when you're wanting to see the total files in a folder though.

Thanks for the suggestion -- will try it ASAP.

go to the directory ctrl+a to select all and then it should have the count of files in the status bar [view/ status bar] or if you expand the details area on the left side of the window it will show you the count there too

Choose VIEW from the menu bar and select STATUS bar. The total # of objects and free space of the folder/drive selected should now be displayed at the bottom of the window.

These are good suggestions to but they won't show you the count of sub-folders.

Thanks for all your replies. I have XP on my work computer and will not be using it again till next Monday. So I will have to wait to test out the various suggestions.

Right click on the specific folder you want. Then click properties. Down below it will tell you how many files and folders!

NoobX - this is what I tried first and I didn't get anything telling me the number of files on the CD (which were not in a folder). I selected the CD drive in the left pane and then right clicked - no properties showed up in the context menu.

then right click on the folder and click explore! after that select all and right click then goto properties and it will tell u the number of files and folders!
