checking for prefs

How would I see if a user has certain prefs on thier comp, and if not, put them there. Does it matter if I set the same pref twice? Will it just overwrite? If that's true then i dont need to know how to check for them.

what prefs? Windows prefs? I would use a Visual basic active X object to gather that kind of data.

In director try the getprefs and setprefs commands, they are in the lingo dictionary.
